Nokia and Dolphin signed GBP 50 million TETRA infrastructure contract

As announced 26 February 1998, Dolphin has chosen Nokia as its preferred radio system and terminal supplier. The companies have now signed a contract for the infrastructure delivery of Nokia’s TETRA system. Dolphin chose Nokia because of Nokia’s ability to deliver a system with the high level of advanced features and functions required by the Dolphin network. In addition to cellular services, the network meets the special needs of most demanding professional mobile users.
The contract value is GBP 50 million and the deliveries will start in March 1998. In addition to this infrastructure contract, Nokia will also provide an initial supply of 40,000 handsets. The Dolphin network will be the world’s first commercial TETRA network.
Nokia will deliver to Dolphin a complete TETRA network including switches, base stations and a network management system. Nokia will also provide installation and other customer services.

TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) is an open digital trunked radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute ETSI to meet the needs of most demanding professional mobile users.

In December 1997, Nokia signed a contract for the delivery of the world’s first nation-wide TETRA network for the Finnish Ministry of Interior. Nokia other
TETRA customers include Helsinki City Energy Company, ElTele Öst of Norway and TeleDanmark. In Britain, Nokia is participating in the Quadrant Consortium, which is designing and planning the new digital radio service for use by all the country’s emergency services.
