Nokia unveils the world's most elegant GSM phone
March 18, 1998
Metal-coated Nokia 8810 is designed for people with special eye for unique beauty
Nokia today announced its new premium class GSM phone, the Nokia 8810, at the CeBIT '98 exhibition in Hannover, Germany. At 98 grams, the Nokia 8810 is one of the smallest GSM phones on the market, fully featured with distinctive metallic coating and elegant Nokia design. The product will be available for GSM 900 markets in the third quarter of 1998.
"We wanted to create a phone which was not only about advanced technology. Even more important, we wanted to design a phone that would make people instinctively reach out and say, 'I like this,' a design that would communicate style and enduring quality. Like a fine watch or a fountain pen, the Nokia 8810 is a product you need. But more than that, it is a beautiful object that you desire", explained Frank Nuovo, Chief Designer, Nokia Mobile Phones.
The Nokia 8810 reflects the elegance and individual style of its owner. The phone has a timeless design, accented with silver, and a stylish slide cover for extra protection and comfort of use. Genuine materials, clear lines, and sophisticated technology make the Nokia 8810 a premium phone - not just a personal communications tool, but a truly exquisite accessory.
"We believe that the Nokia 8810 will expand the meaning of premium wireless phones in the market towards design-focused thinking. The classic Nokia elements of individuality and enduring quality are reflected in the metal coating of the Nokia 8810. We are confident that the appeal of the phone will give its user the intuitive feeling of elegance and value," said Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.
The Nokia 8810 is a fully featured mobile phone with a user interface with call profiles and caller grouping functions. Although small in size and weight, the Nokia 8810 still comes with a large display and comfortable keypad. The phone has a high class internal antenna and a built-in vibration alert. Operation times are unmatched in this size category: standby time is up to 133 hours and talk time up to 2 h 50 min with the standard battery. The Nokia 8810 supports all three wireless voice codecs: Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) for improved audio quality, Full Rate and Half Rate.
The built-in infrared port of the Nokia 8810 can be used for exchanging name and number information, calendar notes as well as printing that information and short messages. The Nokia 8810 connects to a PC for data connections without any special software or cables. Other features include 32 languages, 35 ringing tones, calculator, calendar, and three games: Snake, Logic, and Memory. The phone fully supports GSM Phase 2 features and a selection of Phase 2+ features.
