March 18, 1998
The new phones feature excellent operation times and NaviTM Key for ease of use
Nokia today introduced the new Nokia 5100 series of handportable phones at the CeBIT '98 exhibition in Hannover, Germany. The new phones feature the famous Nokia NaviTM Key concept which makes the phones extremely simple to use through an intelligent menu system. The new series consists of two models, the Nokia 5110 for GSM 900 and the Nokia 5130 for GSM 1800. The products will be available in volumes in May 1998.
The Nokia 5100 series of phones highlights Nokia's commitment to the values of individuality, innovation, ease of use and human touch. The Nokia 5100 phones are the first mobile phones that allow the users to change the new Xpress-on™ Cover by themselves, in just a matter of seconds and without any special tools. Upon purchasing the phone, the customer is invited to pick up an extra cover for free from a selection of four different colors. In addition to these, accessory covers can be purchased separately from a selection of seven metallic designs. For ultimate individuality and excitement, the customer can purchase a unique cover designed by a Nokia Recommended Painter.
"We believe that the Nokia 5100 series phones will appeal especially to fashion-conscious people who are buying their first mobile phone. Incredibly easy to use, the products have a great variety of exciting features and excellent performance. Now for the first time, the user can have a true choice of color and change it at any time. We know that customers place a high value on expressing their individuality, and Nokia is committed to catering to their needs," said Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.
The Nokia 5100 phones weigh only 170 grams with the standard battery, still providing outstanding operation times. The standby time is up to 230-270 hours and the talk time is up to 5 hours with the standard battery. The phones have a large graphics display with the intelligent icon-based menu system. The user interface is easily accessible with the Nokia Navi™ Key, an innovation introduced in the famous Nokia 3110 phone. The phone features also include the quickly adjustable alert by pressing the power key, 28 languages and 30 ringing tones, full data capabilities, calculator and three games: Snake, Logic and Memory.
The Nokia 5100 phones fully support GSM Phase 2 features and a selection of Phase 2+ features. They also support all three wireless voice codecs: Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) for improved voice quality, Full Rate, and Half Rate. Nokia developed the EFR jointly with the University of Sherbrooke, and drove the adoption of EFR to the industry standard for GSM. Nokia 5100 phones use 3V technology. The products have a full range of accessories that are compatible with the Nokia 6100 series.
