20 millionth Nokia GSM phone sold in Europe
March 18, 1998

The 20 millionth Nokia GSM phone in Europe was sold this month in Stockholm, Sweden. The phone was the Nokia 6110, sold at the GEAB telecommunications shop in Gallerian, Stockholm. GEAB is one of the leading telecom specialists in Sweden. The buyer, a 35 year old Swedish man, says that he is very pleased with the Nokia phone, which has been recommended to him by his friends. He is particularly happy with the good battery performance of the Nokia 6110.

Nokia is the pioneer in GSM technology. The first ever GSM phone call was made in 1991 by a Nokia made handset and Nokia supplied network. Due to Nokia's long term commitment to research work and standardization of digital technologies, the company achieved an early advantage in GSM's commercial launch. Today Nokia is a leading supplier of GSM phones, having a wide range of products and the most advanced wireless data solutions in the market. In mobile infrastructure, Nokia is a world leader in GSM 1800, and one of the top two suppliers of GSM 900 solutions.

GSM is the world's most popular digital cellular standard. 70 million people in over 100 countries use GSM phones. GSM now accounts for one third of the world's total wireless market. The GSM MoU Association expects the number of users to exceed 205 million by the end of year 2000. The milestone of 100 million GSM customers will be surpassed during 1998.

"A mobile phone is rapidly becoming the preferred phone in the most developed markets around the world. It is now practically impossible to define a typical mobile phone user, as there are many segments among consumers with differing lifestyles and needs for communication. The key factor to our success, as being the biggest mobile phone manufacturer in Europe, is our ability to listen to our customers and respond to their individual needs", said Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.

Nokia today announced three new GSM products at the CeBIT '98 exhibition in Hannover, Germany. The Nokia 8810, Nokia 9110 Communicator and Nokia 5100 complete Nokia's renewed product range, which now provides solutions for mobile communications to all market segments.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and PC monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people worldwide.
