Nokia GSM Intranet Office puts the workplace in motion
March 18, 1998

Nokia introduces today at CeBIT 98, the Nokia GSM Intranet Office, a revolutionary new solution giving employees total mobility in the workplace via the company intranet. The Nokia GSM Intranet Office offers a full range of services that can be utilised with existing phone technology, at a cost-effective price.

The Nokia GSM Intranet Office is a combination of state-of-the-art Internet telephony technology and field-proven GSM systems. Using standard GSM phones and GSM base stations equipped with computer technology, phone calls can be made via the intranet to various mobile phones, fixed phones or PC terminals throughout an office. Outside the office premises, the calls are routed normally through the GSM network.

The Nokia GSM Intranet Office allows a range of useful features to be supported in both the phone itself and the GSM network. This may include advanced services, such as a telephone directory, short messaging, multiparty services, data calls, call barring and call forwarding.

Development of the Nokia GSM Intranet Office not only makes total employee mobility easier, but it can be achieved at a cost comparable to any cordless technology. Previously, companies were forced to carefully evaluate the value of total mobility in their business processes due to the higher cost of intra-office communications. With Nokia GSM Intranet Office, intra-office calls can be provided at very low cost. For business users, this means a quantum leap towards total employee mobility and reachability.

Operators can benefit by offering a broader range of services targeted to the corporate sector. Nokia GSM Intranet Office represents a valuable tool for mobile operators to focus on the needs of this relatively untapped market.

Nokia provides total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission to switching. Nokia holds the world's number one position in GSM 1800 networks and is one of the top two suppliers in GSM 900 networks. To date, Nokia GSM technology has been supplied to 67 operators in 35 countries.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and PC monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people worldwide.
