Nokia Traffica - the real time traffic monitoring tool for mobile networks
March 18, 1998
Today at CeBIT '98, Nokia introduces a unique solution for today's network management; Nokia Traffica, the real-time traffic monitoring tool. Nokia Traffica extracts real-time data from telecom traffic as it happens and presents it in easily-interpretable graphs, unlocking a broad range of key data to operators. The operator can now see network functioning from the end-user's perspective from the network level, right down to individual subscriber information.
Nokia Traffica works on information it receives on every call attempt made - whether successful or unsuccessful - through a Nokia Mobile Switching Centre (MSC). Every call attempt including, for example, those attempts made when the line is busy, the call is not established and so on, immediately affects the real-time graphs.
Nokia Traffica's configuration is very flexible: the operator can concentrate on call data passing through a specific MSC or monitor the whole network. It is also easy to add more Nokia Trafficas later on if new MSCs are installed in the network.
As a tool, Nokia Traffica can be used within two basic operating tasks, monitoring and troubleshooting. For monitoring, Nokia Traffica can help the operator to pinpoint and highlight potential problems without delay, by visualising the network traffic in real time. The operator can also get more information on a variety of subjects; for example, how many international calls have been made and to which countries, as well as the call duration. It is also possible to monitor the amount and success of data traffic - an increasing factor in today's telecom traffic. And operators can define their own alarms and criteria to trigger the alarms, such as "amount of traffic dropped under each BSC".
Nokia Traffica is also the tool for launching specific enquiries, particularly for troubleshooting. So, in the case of a service level complaint, the operator may need to analyse a single phone call on a particular terminal made in the network. This level can be easily reached using Nokia Traffica, adding a new dimension to customer care for the operator.
Nokia Traffica interworks seamlessly with Nokia's other network management products. In combination with Nokia NMS/2000, Traffica-generated alarms are automatically forwarded into the NMS/2000 for a holistic view of network functioning. In combination with Nokia Network Data Warehouse with its range of Web-distributable post-processed reports, the operator can now get the full picture on network operations; from the infrastructure level right down to service management.
Nokia provides total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmisson to switching. Nokia holds the world's number one position in GSM 1800 networks and is one of the top two suppliers in GSM 900 networks. To date, Nokia GSM technology has been supplied to 67 operators in 35 countries.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and PC monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people worldwide.
