Introducing the Nokia Terminal Management system
March 18, 1998
- improving the management of Wireless Local Loop networks
Nokia introduces at CeBIT '98, the Nokia Terminal Management system for Nokia PremiCell Wireless Local Loop terminals. This system enables the operator to run a Nokia PremiCell terminal fleet efficiently at a minimum maintenance cost. It makes it possible to analyse, control and manage the operations of all Nokia PremiCell terminals in the network. Cost-savings are achieved through remote maintenance of the terminals and preventive actions carried out based on the system alarms and measurements. As more detailed network information is collected by the management system, the network service level increases. This enables the focused planning of subscriber services.
The Terminal Management system is a supervisory centre communicating with every Nokia PremiCell terminal in the network, indicating the status of these terminals. In the installation phase, the management system, used either locally or remotely, indicates the quality of connection. Remote configuration of parameters can be carried out for a single terminal, for a specific group of terminals or for all terminals at the same time. This enables an operator to, for example, change features remotely for one subscriber's service package. Alarms reporting an "out-of-service-state" or other service breaks are received and handled before the subscriber has even noticed any interruption in the service. And the reports generated by the system, providing information on subscriber behaviour and statistics are extremely useful for service and marketing planning.
The Terminal Management is part of Nokia's overall network management and will be linked to the Nokia NMS/2000 in the near future. This link will enable alarms and reports from the Terminal Management system to be shown on the Nokia NMS/2000 alarm application screen. It also allows remote management from the Nokia NMS/2000 to the Terminal Management system. It can be also used as a standalone PremiCell terminal management tool.
A Nokia PremiCell terminal, connected to a standard telephone set, telefax or computer, offers a wireless connection for homes and small offices both in remote and urban areas. Nokia PremiCell is also part of Nokia's wireless local loop network Nokia Easywave, based on GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900.
The Nokia WLL solution, Nokia Easywave, enables operators to make use of an existing GSM network or to implement a wireless access solution to the PSTN, providing fixed types of telephony services to its customers. WLL is both cost and time-effective, since the laying of cables is avoided. Nokia provides total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmisson to switching. Nokia holds the world's number one position in GSM 1800 networks and is one of the top two suppliers in GSM 900 networks. To date, Nokia GSM technology has been supplied to 67 operators in 35 countries.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and PC monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people worldwide.
