The new Nokia SYNFONET WDM
March 18, 1998
- providing cost-effective capacity enhancement for SDH networks
Today at CeBIT '98, Nokia introduces the SYNFONET SDH/WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) system. Using Wavelength Division Multiplexing techniques, this system offers up to 20 Gbit/s bandwidth in one fibre, enabling more traffic to be sent through both access and regional networks.
An integrated WDM solution for the SYNFONET STM-16 node, this high-capacity product provides telecommunications operators with a means of increasing capacity in congested or busy routes, without laying new fibre. It is therefore a very cost-effective solution even for short distance links and particularly for new application areas in the network.
As part of Nokia's SDH product family, SYNFONET, the Nokia WDM solution offers the same operator benefits. The Nokia SDH/WDM enables the operator to 'build as they go', increasing the network in line with business demands. The flexibility of the system means that operators can make a low initial investment and can upgrade the network gradually to meet capacity needs. This also means that the network is future-proof, being built incrementally. As the SYNFONET SDH/WDM is part of the well-proven STM-16 node and based on familiar SDH technology, only a few additional, passive components are required, enabling a robust and easy-to-manage system.
The SYNFONET SDH/WDM consists of wavelength precise "multicolour" interface units and 4- or 8-channel multiplexing and demultiplexing units. And, by implementing the optional optical amplifier units, the link distance can be increased up to 120 kms.
Nokia's SDH product family, SYNFONET, provides the telecommunications operator with a total SDH concept for access and transport networks, incorporated under a full network management system, Nokia NMS. The Nokia SYNFONET enables the operator to flexibly build their network for future data and broadband solutions. Nokia's SDH technology has been supplied to or ordered by more than 70 customers in over 20 countries.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and PC monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people world-wide.

Note to editors WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is a technique which enables several independent optical signals to be transmitted in the same fibres, using different wavelengths i.e. 'coloured lasers' - transmitters are on different colours and receivers are colour sensitive. WDM can be used, for example, to ease fibre exhaust problems.
