The new Nokia Artus Messaging Platform
March 18, 1998

- enhancing value-added wireless data services

Nokia introduces the second release of the Nokia Artus Messaging Platform, to improve mobile operators' capabilities in the provision of value-added wireless data services. Including all the features of the first Messaging Platform, this new release offers a wide range of new features and enhancements. With Messaging Platform, operators can stay ahead in the race to provide enhanced wireless data services.

Offering value-added wireless data services with Nokia Artus Messaging Platform, the operator can have a significant competitive advantage over later entrants in the wireless data market. Among other things, operators can introduce information service based on web pages, easily and rapidly. These services can be set up as user groups; this means that services can be tailored for individual users or for groups of users who may have similar service requirements. Messaging Platform is ready to support WAP (Wireless Access Protocol), which will standardise advanced intelligent messaging services for digital mobile phones and other wireless devices. As Messaging Platform is based on the operator's existing SMS (Short Message Service) infrastructure, costs are minimised. Faster, more cost-efficient service provision means reduced churn. Particularly in those markets where mobile phone penetration is increasing rapidly, wireless data is becoming an increasingly important tool for providing revenue opportunities.

For mobile users, Nokia Artus Messaging Platform offers personalised "push and pull" services. They can subscribe or unsubscribe to 'push' services via a Web-browser or their mobile phone. They will be able to set their own personal preferences and trigger the time when they receive specific services. Additionally, with Messaging Platform, mobile users will be able to 'pull' information from any web site anytime with their mobile phone. They will be able to receive services, providing them with personalised information. Sending and receiving e-mail as short messages will also be possible.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching. Having supplied GSM technology to 67 operators in 35 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and PC monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people world-wide.
