Providing reliable access to IP networks
March 18, 1998
- the Nokia ISDN IP access solution
Nokia's new ISDN IP (Internet Protocol) Access is a solution enabling operators to connect their ISDN and PSTN customers to IP networks quickly, in a cost-effective way. Using the Nokia ISDN IP Access product, operators can reduce the number of access routers and assign different user priorities to different types of end users. Operators can now offer professional IP network users, such as teleworkers and Small Office Home Office workers (SOHO), high network availability, high-quality service, and low-cost Internet access to residential users.
"Access to IP networks is the fastest-growing service in today's telephony networks. Nokia ISDN IP Access provides ISDN and analog dial-in, user priorities and advanced routing. All the network components are handled by one management system, to meet the needs of both operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Direct-line customers can also be connected to the network, and mobile subscribers can dial in through their GSM network," states Mr Heikki Hämmäinen, Vice President, System Development, Nokia Telecommunications.
Configuring customer premises equipment has, up to now, been a headache for corporate IT organisations and network operators. "The Nokia ISDN IP access solution means that changes at the customer premises are hardly ever needed," Mr Hämmäinen continues. "The end user enjoys reliable Internet access with a minimum of configuration work, and gets one service number for data calls. Gone are the days of the subscriber dialling and redialling in search of an available server."
The Nokia ISDN IP access solution is built on the advanced features of the Nokia DX 200 switching platform, Nokia Artus data communications products and the Nokia Network Management System.
The IP (Internet Protocol) was developed as part of research into internetworking funded by the American Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The IP is one protocol associated with the complete protocol suite (stack) used with the Internet, and known as TCP/IP (transmission control protocol / Internet protocol). Today the IP is used as a network protocol in the Internet as well as in internal company networks, intranets, and extranets.
Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufactures infrastructure equipment and systems for fixed and mobile networks. Nokia's switching solutions and applications are built on the DX 200 switching platform, used in mobile and fixed applications alike. The DX 200 also offers a growth path to broadband applications, including future developments in ATM switching technology. Nokia has delivered its DX 200 switching solutions to around 120 operators in over 30 countries.
