Making the broadband future a reality
March 18, 1998
- Nokia launches the Nokia Eksos access concept
Nokia today introduces at CeBIT '98, the Nokia Eksos Concept for modern broadband/narrowband access networks. The Nokia Eksos Concept provides the solutions to deliver both narrowband and broadband services, quickly and cost-efficiently. The concept is highly suited to both combined narrowband/broadband applications as well as separate narrowband and broadband applications.
Nokia Eksos is an optimised access concept including both V5-based access and ATM over xDSL-based broadband access, with a clear path toward building the multiservice access network platforms. Eksos is a future-proof solution, with a smooth migration from narrowband to broadband, and allowing the easy introduction of higher capacity VDSL or fibre connections in the future.
The Eksos narrowband access node is designed to provide flexibility and freedom when building complete V5 and managed leased line access networks, as well as cost-optimised simple V5 access solutions. The Eksos broadband access node is a two-level ATM multiplexer with xDSL access which gives high-speed broadband access over the existing copper lines. The Nokia Eksos Concept also includes a range of xDSL network terminals.
Optimised Narrowband
Eksos AN/n is based on the standardised V5 open interface. It allows the free combination of POTS, ISDN and data in the same node, and is scaleable; this means that the operator can begin with a low initial investment, increasing the network in line with demand. Through concentration, cross-connection and grooming, the network topology made possible with Eksos narrowband node can mean important cost savings in network investments, operations, and maintenance. Network reliability and availability are further improved with Nokia NMS network management and line testing. Eksos AN/n also provides a firm foundation on which to build a multiservice access network platform for the future.
From Narrowband to Broadband
The broadband access node module of the Nokia Eksos Concept, Eksos AN/b, provides operators with the possibility to deliver broadband services, including high-speed Internet for business and residential customers. With remotely-controlled ADSL service activation, Eksos broadband node allows greater efficiency in rolling out the services to end users. Remote line activation enables the operator to make broadband service activation within a few minutes of the customer having subscribed to the service, rather than in several days. The future will bring the added advantage of plug-and-play installations of ADSL terminals and line testing for the ADSL connections.
The Nokia Eksos Concept also allows more efficient use of the transmission and switching network resources. The Eksos Concept enables the gradual expansion of operator access networks based on the service requirements of the various areas. The platform is based on ATM technology, providing a solution which supports present high-speed Internet services, and which is transparent for future services, such as video. 2(2)
Nokia's access solutions provide operators with the tools to connect end users to network services. Nokia has already supplied access solutions to over forty countries world-wide. Nokia's long experience in transmission has been instrumental in developing the ability to design and implement integrated, cost-efficient solutions.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and PC monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people worldwide.
