Nokia signs GSM 1800 expansion deal with Shanghai PTA to form the first dual band network in China
March 17, 1998
Nokia Telecommunications and the Shanghai Post and Telecommunications Administration (PTA), China have signed an agreement for the expansion of the GSM 1800 network. The value of this agreement is approximately USD 60 million. Combined with the existing GSM 900 network, this will form the first dual band network in China which will go into service in early 1998.
Shanghai PTA is one of the leading operators in China’s telecommunication market with about 750 thousand mobile subscribers for both TACS and GSM.
Nokia will deliver a range of GSM 1800 equipment to the Shanghai PTA, including the Nokia DX 200 mobile switching centre providing an additional capacity of upto 400,000 subscribers in the network, as well as a Base Station System and transmission equipment. The contract also includes a technical support package and optimisation package together with a knowledge transfer program to strengthen the cooperation between Shanghai PTA and Nokia.
"Our first contract with the Shanghai PTA, signed in 1997, was a breakthrough for GSM 1800 in China," states Mr Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President, Nokia, Greater China. "This expansion agreement once again confirms Nokia's position as the world leader in GSM 1800, and the importance of this technology in the fast-growing Chinese market. The densely populated area of Shanghai, with some 13 million inhabitants, sets demanding requirements from any GSM system. The Nokia GSM 1800 system has already proven its capabilities to the Shanghai PTA, which has led to this new agreement."
Having supplied GSM technology to 67 operators in 35 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia (NYSE:NOKA) develops, manufactures and supplies mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors to consumers and businesses in 130 countries.
