Nokia pledges commitment to Multimedia Super Corridor

Today, Nokia submitted its application for Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC)-status and pledged its support for the national technology project. Nokia is that the MSC is an excellent environment as a regional hub to develop wireless data and multimedia applications and services.


Mr. Jorma Ollila, President and CEO of Nokia Group was in Kuala Lumpur today for a meeting with Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Executive Chairman of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC), Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Othman Yeop Abdullah to discuss the developments in the MSC and Nokia's contribution to the MSC.

Nokia's plan is to establish a special competence centre for wireless data and multimedia within the MSC, which will be a part of Nokia's global competence resources to develop leading edge multimedia products and services for regional and global markets. In addition, Nokia will move its existing competence centres in Malaysia within the MSC.

Mr. Ollila who is also a member of the prestigious MSC International Advisory Panel. (IAP) to the MSC said, "The ultimate goal is to establish the high-tech Nokia House within the MSC".

He added that Nokia will bring its vision of " Total Mobility" within the confines of the MSC. The "Total Mobility" concept is Nokia's global strategy of the way people will communicate with each other in business or in any other environment in future, free of any restriction of the location and time.

Through the establishment of Nokia's competence centres and research verification and integration centre, Nokia enables the transfer of technology and knowledge to Malaysia. Nokia's commitment to Malaysia is to increase the number of Malaysian engineer, who will then be able to apply their skills and knowledge not only in Malaysia but the region and globally.

Training is an essential part of this know how transfer, and presently Nokia schedules some 30 days training per year for each of its knowledge workers in Malaysia. Nokia will also further strengthen its close cooperation with local universities on research and development programmes.
