Omnitel of Lithuania connects Nokia Mobile Switching Center into commercial traffic

Omnitel, the leading Lithuanian GSM operator, is incorporating the new Nokia Mobile Switching Center into commercial traffic. This enables Omnitel to meet the fast growing demand for mobile telecommunications in Lithuania and further develop the quality of their GSM network.


The Nokia MSC, with a capacity of 150,000 subscribers, is part of Nokia's GSM 900/1800 system solution. Nokia is world-reknowned as a forerunner in introducing new mobile services, and is especially focused on providing data services. Being a leader in the Lithuanian Internet arena, Omnitel will be able to offer even more advanced services to benefit Lithuanian subscribers in the future, based on these capabilities.

Established in 1991, Omnitel is a Lithuanian - American joint venture and joint stock company. The number of subscribers in the GSM network currently exceeds 97000 and the network covers 90% of the Lithuanian territory. GSM networks are expanding throughout the world and with roaming agreements, Omnitel services can already be used in 35 countries globally. In addition to GSM services, Omnitel offers Internet, international X25 and paging services.

Nokia provides total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission to switching. Nokia holds the world's number one position in GSM 1800 networks and is one of the top two suppliers of GSM 900 networks. To date, Nokia GSM technology has been delivered to or ordered by 66 operators in 35 countries.
