Nokia announced as preferred supplier for Dolphins new mobile network in the UK
February 26, 1998

The world’s first nation-wide TETRA network for professional mobile users

Dolphin Telecommunications, formerly TetraLink Telecommunications Ltd, has announced its intention to award Nokia a contract to provide network infrastructure for Dolphin’s digital wireless communications network, based on the digital TETRA standard. Dolphin’s UK investment programme for the infrastructure is over GBP 200 million to deliver a national service. The Dolphin network would be the world’s first commercial TETRA network.

Nokia was chosen as preferred supplier because of its ability to deliver a system with the high level of advanced features and functions required by the Dolphin network. In addition to cellular services, the network meets the special needs of most demanding professional mobile users.

“Nokia fought hard for the contract to build the world’s first commercial TETRA-based national network and as our preferred supplier they bring a wealth of experience and skills”, commented Ted Beddoes, Managing Director of Dolphin Telecommunications.

“The Dolphin network is to be the world’s first nation-wide TETRA network for professional mobile users and Nokia is proud to be announced as preferred supplier. It is a remarkable and important reference for Nokia” Mr. Tapio Heikkilä, General Manager for Nokia Telecommunications’ Professional Mobile Radio pointed out.

According to the plans, Nokia is to supply a complete TETRA network including switches, base stations and a complete network management system. Nokia will also provide installation and other customer services. The contract value for this initial infrastructure phase is GBP 50 million. In addition to this infrastructure investment, Nokia will also provide an initial supply of 40,000 handsets.

Dolphin Telecommunications is building the new Dolphin network which will provide a truly integrated mobile data and voice service previously not available from any other single network. The company is part of Dolphin Corporation Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Telesystem International Wireless (TIW). TIW is a member of the Telesystem Group of Canada and a global operator in high growth wireless markets.

In December 1997, Nokia signed a contract for the delivery of the world’s first nation-wide TETRA network for the Finnish Ministry of Interior. Nokia other TETRA customers include Helsinki City Energy Company, TeleDanmark, the Dutch Police and Telstra of Australia. In Britain, Nokia is participating in the Quadrant Consortium, which is designing and planning the new digital radio service for use by all the country’s emergency services.

TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) is an open digital trunked radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute ETSI to meet the needs of most demanding professional mobile users.

Nokia offers total TETRA systems with everything from terminals to dispatching workstations, base stations and switching. Nokia is also a leading supplier of MPT 1327 based analogue trunked mobile radio system with deliveries to over 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Australia.
