Nokia and AT&T Wireless Offer New Handset to Digital PCS Customers
February 24, 1998

The new Nokia 6162 delivers outstanding talk and standby times

Nokia today announced a new TDMA addition to its sleek 6100 series of digital wireless phones - the Nokia 6162 (800/1900 MHz tri-mode). The phones will allow AT&T Wireless customers the flexibility to utilize various parts of the carrier's network seamlessly. Delivery of the wireless phones is part of a three-year contract with AT&T Wireless Services.

The Nokia 6162, co-branded with AT&T Wireless, features the sleek new 6100 series design, but with an active keypad cover that can be used to end calls. The 6162 incorporates a broad set of features, including new personalized settings, called "Profiles," which enable a user to manage incoming calls and messages by pre-programing the phone to respond in different ways. Through Nokia's revolutionary menu software a user can activate different phone settings, such as "Silent," "Meeting," or "Outdoor" to respond to different environments and lifestyles.

Nokia 6162 features include:

  • Exceptional performance times - standby and talk time
  • High-resolution illuminated graphical display
  • Phone directory that stores up to 199 names and numbers
  • Alarm clock, calendar, calculator, and four entertaining games
  • 35 ringing tones, including popular song melodies
  • Supports four languages (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese)
  • Available in a variety of exciting chameleon-like colors that change in different lighting environments
  • Supported by a full line of Nokia Genuine Accessories for the home, office and automobile

Nokia continues to lead the industry by driving digital development. The new phones employ advanced digital capabilities, including full support of TDMA IS-136 revision A features, up to three Number Assignment Modules (NAMs), Over-the-Air Activation (OTA) and enhanced audio and speech quality achieved with a Nokia-developed EFR (Enhanced Full Rate) voice codec. The phone also supports conference calling of up to three parties.

"The new Nokia TDMA phones are industry benchmarks -- no other TDMA product can match their size, functionality and performance," said Dan Hesse, President and CEO, AT&T Wireless Services. "This new phone will allow our customers the flexibility to travel seamlessly to all of our markets nationwide."

"Nokia is pleased to be providing phones to AT&T Wireless that will essentially change the way consumers use wireless products," said K-P Wilska, President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Inc. "No longer are wireless users limited by technology. These phones have redefined wireless design: it is no longer about the technology, it's about function."
