Nokia GSM technology proves successful in Wireless Local Loop trial in Brazil
February 19, 1998

The Nokia Wireless Local Loop trial, carried out with the operator Telecomunicações de Minas Gerais and the state-owned PTT holding company Telecomunicações Brasileiras S.A. in Brazil, has concluded successfully.

This pilot demonstrated the suitability of GSM technology for wireless local loop applications in a wide range of environments. The Nokia Easywave Access solution, using GSM 1900 technology, was deployed in the city of Divinópolis, in an urban city area with coverage extending to surrounding rural areas.

The Premicell WLL subscriber terminals needed only internal antennas with no line of sight requirement, which resulted in a fast and flexible installation. With the Nokia WLL technology, a cell range of up to 36 km was demonstrated.

One of the key strengths of the Nokia Easywave system is service transparency, which permits the subscriber to use all existing services of a normal fixed line telephone. The use of open interfaces, such as GSM standard interfaces and V5.2 for access networks, is also an advantage for the operator as it allows deployment of various suppliers´ equipment in the same network. This was demonstrated in the trial by using GSM WLL terminals from another supplier in the Nokia network without any degradation of quality.

The final report by Telemig states that all tests set by the state-owned PTT holding company Telebrás were carried out without difficulties and that they are compliant with expected results.

The Nokia Wireless Local Loop (WLL) solution, the Nokia Easywave, enables operators to make use of an existing GSM cellular network, or implement a wireless access solution to the PSTN, in providing a fixed type of telephony services to its customers. WLL enables the operator to rapidly set up a network that grows as the number of subscribers grow.

Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufactures infrastructure equipment and systems for mobile and fixed networks. Nokia is the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest suppliers of GSM 900. In mobile data infrastructure, Nokia is a market leader and pioneer. To date, Nokia's GSM technology has been supplied to or ordered by 65 operators in 34 countries.
