Up to 70 % more capacity for GSM networks, with Nokia Intelligent Frequency Hopping
February 17, 1998

The Nokia Intelligent Frequency Hopping (IFH) solution, part of the Nokia Soft Capacity concept, is the first solution of its kind in today's GSM market. It can add capacity to a GSM network of approximately 70% compared to current levels and offers a superior network quality.

The Nokia IFH is simply a software upgrade to the base station system requiring only some additional network planning. The Nokia IFH is available globally and for all GSM frequency bands, GSM 900, 1800 and 1900.

Evolution path for building capacity

With the Nokia IFH solution, Nokia has combined its Intelligent Underlay-Overlay (IUO) solution with frequency hopping techniques, offering the only such solution in the industry. Nokia IUO implements a two-layer network structure within the GSM network, where one layer provides seamless coverage and the other high capacity. Combining this structure with frequency hopping permits the network capacity to be enhanced even further by allowing for more aggressive frequency reuse on both layers of the Nokia IUO network..

Alternatively, frequency hopping can be used to improve only quality if the existing frequency plan is retained. The dynamic layer selection of Nokia IUO, based on the interference levels, guarantees good quality call connections in all conditions. Operators can enjoy combined capacity and quality gain in their existing base station sites.

Soft Capacity, the smooth entry to microcellular

The Nokia Soft Capacity solution is a continuously evolving combination of powerful software solutions which increase network capacity by using the available frequency bands more efficiently. As the capacity of existing sites can be increased through Nokia Soft Capacity features, investment in new sites can be postponed until absolutely necessary, freeing up capital for other purposes.

Nokia Soft Capacity solutions can be used simultaneously in both the macro and micro layers, boosting capacity and improving quality in each layer so the operator can take the most out of its network.

The unique Nokia innovation, Nokia Intelligent Underlay-Overlay (IUO) forms the core of the Nokia Soft Capacity approach. Available since 1995, it has been successfully implemented in several macrocellular and microcellular networks. It has been proven that Nokia IUO can increase a network's capacity by up to 40% without adding new sites, and greatly improve network quality by reducing the number of dropped calls and congestion in the network.
