Innovative services for BellSouth New Zealand's customers, with Nokia's Intelligent Network
February 06, 1998
Nokia and BellSouth New Zealand have signed an agreement for the provision of a mobile Intelligent Network (IN) for the BellSouth GSM network. This solution will give BellSouth the opportunity to quickly bring many innovative services to its GSM customers.
"We are delighted with the purchase of the new platform," says Mark McCaughan, Enhanced Services Manager at BellSouth New Zealand. "Its a major step towards developing the next generation of cellular technology for the New Zealand market. This purchase will allow us to continue integrating digital mobile technology with other technologies such as the Internet and PABX systems."
"The Nokia IN platform will give BellSouth customers the ability to use their existing numbers with their GSM mobiles once the path to number portability is cleared by other carriers," states Hamish Sansom, Product Development Manager at BellSouth. "And in the future, customers will be able to access services through their GSM mobile that were previously only available on the fixed network. We can see the day when people will be able to use one device, their GSM phone, for all their PCS needs."
The integration of services and other technologies into the network, gives BellSouth greater flexibility in developing new services faster, and paves the way for efficient solutions to issues such as number portability and PCS (Personal Communications Services) needs.
Nokia's mobile Intelligent Network solution enables operators to quickly create and add new telephone services to their networks. This means that they can better and more easily serve their customers by tailoring services to specific markets as well as dramatically reducing the time it takes to get a service from the stage of being an idea through to a viable service for a mobile user.
Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching. Having supplied GSM technology to 65 operators in 34 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.

Note to editors:
An Intelligent Network (IN) is a hardware and software platform which can be incorporated as part of the mobile or fixed network switch.
As telecommunications markets become increasingly competitive, operators need to provide services to end users which will make them stand out from their competitors. As end users demand more services with increasing sophistication, operators must be able to offer different types of services for selected customer segments. And of course, to be most competitive, operators need to provide these services as quickly as possible. Intelligent Networks can provide this competitive edge.
The Intelligent Network can provide high quality services with minimal time and effort and enables operators to offer targeted services profitably to smaller market segments. Different capabilities within the IN platform mean that operators can have centralised service management, a customised network and full service-programming tools.
The Nokia SMAP in particular simplifies the management of services. With SMAP, end-users can change or manage selected service settings themselves by means of a World Wide Web (WWW) interface over the Internet or an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) interface over the telephone. Corporate customers can use the Internet option to administer the services of each and every mobile phone user within the company.
