Nokia expands ElTele Øst's Tetra network in Norway
February 05, 1998
ElTele Øst (the former Oslo Energi Tele) and Nokia, have signed a contract for the expansion of ElTele Øst`s trunked mobile radio system, based on the new digital TETRA standard. Nokia will deliver its TETRA infrastructure equipment and terminals to ElTele Øst.
The deliveries for the expansion began in January 1998 and the installation work will continue throughout this year and in early 1999. ElTele Øst and Nokia signed the initial contract for the first phase deliveries in March 1997. Deliveries began in December 1997 and the first calls took place in the network on January 28 this year.
"We chose Nokia because of its experience in professional mobile radio and digital technology. Additionally, Nokia is acknowledged in the telecoms market as a manufacturer delivering timely, quality products. Nokia's TETRA system specifications fulfills our needs, and we feel confident that with this system, we can offer our customers the versatile services they need," Mr Tor Helge LyngstØl from ElTele Øst explains.
ElTele Øst will provide telecommunications services to a number of customers in the area of Oslo, Norway. The company is owned by five electricity companies and now employs over 160 people. ElTele Øst is investing heavily in telecommunication systems in order to be a major player in the recently deregulated Norwegian Telecom market.
"Our primary customers for the TETRA system will be the Oslo Municipality, Viken Energinett and other utility and service providers. In parallel, we are working with Oslo Sporveier and will have TETRA coverage in parts of their subway tunnels in February this year. Both tunnel and outdoor coverage will be in the 410-430 MHz band covered by the TETRA system," says Tor Helge LyngstØl, manager of the TETRA project at ElTele Øst.
In December 1997, Nokia signed a contract for the delivery of the world's first nation-wide TETRA network with the Finnish Ministry of Interior. Nokia's other TETRA customers include Helsinki City Energy Company, TeleDanmark and the Dutch Police. In Britain, Nokia is participating in the Quadrant Consortium, which is designing and planning the new digital radio service for use by all the country's emergency services.
Terrestrial Trunked Radio is an open digital trunked radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standard institute ETSI to meet the needs of most demanding professional mobile users.
Nokia offers total TETRA systems with everything from terminals to dispatching workstations, base stations and switching. Nokia is also a leading supplier of MPT 1327 based analogue trunked mobile radio system with deliveries to over 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Australia.
