Nokia, Ericsson and Benefon Cooperate in Developing NMT Standard
February 02, 1998
Nokia, Ericsson and Benefon have agreed to cooperate in further developing the NMT 450/900 standard, working in close relation with NMT operators. The main enhancements to the NMT standard are to come in the areas of speech protection and improved capacity.
During 1997, as many as 15 new NMT-450 operators began service in new networks. The latest system addition to the NMT standard is the group of advanced service features called the Plus Features, proposed by Nokia, Ericsson, and Benefon.
The Plus Features include advanced services such as Calling Line Identity, Short Message Service and Voice Mail Indication, as well as a new generation of small and light phones to support them. These features, together with the very economical coverage offered by NMT, provide network operators with excellent opportunities for business success.
All new proposals to the standard are to be compatible with all network elements, giving NMT operators a free choice between competing product suppliers. The cooperation agreement covers specification work but does not include product development.
Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufacturers infrastructure equipment and systems for cellular and fixed networks. Nokia is a leading supplier of NMT networks, with the first deliveries in 1981. Today, there are some two million subscribers in Nokia's NMT networks globally.
Ericsson's 100,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries. Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones and infocom systems makes Ericsson a world-leading supplier in telecommunications.
