Joint Press Release from Alcatel, Bosch, Ericsson, Italtel, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel, Siemens and Sony
January 29, 1998

ETSI accept single solution for UMTS air interface
- Suppliers come together

At an ETSI working group meeting in Paris today, a decision was taken for a single air interface solution for the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), Europe's next generation mobile communications.

The consensus decision was made by ETSI, based on a proposal submitted by the world's leading telecommunications manufacturers - Alcatel, Bosch, Ericsson, Italtel, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel, Siemens and Sony - who will jointly promote a single technology for UMTS.

Now the nine companies will jointly support one consistent solution for the wideband air interface based on W-CDMA and TD-CDMA technologies. This combination provides a comprehensive solution for both wide-area and low mobility indoor applications.

In a joint statement, the nine companies said: "This is the first step towards achieving a worldwide standard for the next millenium, and we believe that our combined solution will facilitate a superior UMTS technology that will drive the timely development of equipment and applications for the benefit of mobile network operators and end-users worldwide".

These companies will work together to provide agreed guidelines for the handling of IPR's (Intellectual Property Rights) essential to the UMTS air interface specification which result in reasonable cost for the manufacturers.

Built on the worldwide GSM footprint and requirements from Japan, the chosen UMTS technology will secure a fast way forward and ensure an evolutionary path into the future. Current GSM investments and users will be able to easily migrate into the new wireless information age.

UMTS will provide wideband wireless multimedia capabilities over mobile communications networks. The technology will realise a range of new and innovative services including video, internet/intranet and high speed data communications.
