Nokia Provides Major Sponsorship for Landmark Exhibition of Chinese Art at the Guggenheim Museum in New York
January 29, 1998

Nokia will be a major sponsor of China: 5,000 Years, a landmark exhibition that opens in New York at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Guggenheim Museum SoHo on February 6. More than 500 objects from the People’s Republic of China, many never before presented in the United States, will be on view through June 3 tracing the history of Chinese art from 3,000 BCE to the modern era. The exhibition is the largest export of art ever to leave Mainland China.

“We are honored for the opportunity to be part of this unparalleled exhibition and to establish a partnership with the Guggenheim,” said Jorma Ollila, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nokia. “The alliance between Nokia and the Guggenheim is based on a mutual vision of connecting people globally and enriching lives through art, design and technology.”

“The Guggenheim is pleased to welcome Nokia as a major sponsor of the China: 5,000 Years exhibition,” said Thomas Krens, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. “The exhibition examines the spirit of innovation throughout the great eras of Chinese art. It is a fitting sponsorship for Nokia, a company known worldwide as a leading innovator in technology and cross-cultural communication.”

Nokia’s sponsorship of the exhibition is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to serving the global community by providing support in the areas of technology research, education, and public broadcasting as well as the arts. Other arts sponsorships include Chinese Year of Fine Arts 1998 in collaboration with the Chinese Ministry of arts and the Finnish Museum for Modern Arts, in Helsinki.

In its sponsorship of China: 5,000 Years, Nokia is joined by three other major sponsors: Lufthansa, Ford Motor Company and The Coca-Cola Company.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled $8.5 billion (FIM 39.3 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people in 45 countries. Nokia’s shares are listed in Helsinki, New York, London, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Paris. Find us at www.nokia.com.
