Nokia Wins Fifth GSM Expansion Contract with Beijing Telecommunications Adminstration, China

Nokia Telecommunications and the Beijing Telecommunications Adminstration (BTA) have signed a contract for the supply of the fifth GSM network expansion. The value of the contract is estimated at USD 70 million, and deliveries will begin shortly. The network expansion will be operational by August 1998.
Nokia will supply a range of equipment to the Beijing Telecommunications Adminstration, including high capacity mobile switching centres and home location registers. Nokia will also deliver state-of-the-art base station systems lincluding base station controllers and base transceiver stations.
"Nokia has been an integral part of the Beijing Telecommunications Adminstration network since day one and we are therefore very proud to win this fifth network expansion," states Mr Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President Nokia Greater China. "The global success of the GSM standard is reflected in the continued growth of networks such as the BTA's GSM network."
Nokia and the Beijing Telecommunications Adminstration began their co-operation with the supply of the initial network by Nokia in May 1994. Nokia has supplied the three subsequent network expansions in 1995, 1996 and February 1997.
Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching. Having supplied GSM technology to 65 operators in 34 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.
