Nokia Introduces Its First 1900 MHz CDMA Phone for the Americas
December 03, 1997

The new Nokia 2170 reinforces Nokia’s commitment to CDMA technology

IRVING, Texas – Nokia today introduced the company’s first Code Division Multiple Access-based 1900 MHz digital phone, the Nokia 2170. Developed at Nokia’s Research and Development Center in San Diego, the Nokia 2170 will be available in commercial volumes the first quarter of 1998.

The Nokia 2170 supports all new digital features, including short message service (SMS), call forwarding, call waiting, caller identification and voice privacy. The phone can be personalized easily with 10 distinct ringing tones, VIP alert tones, colored face plates and multi-language capabilities including English, French and Spanish. Larry Paulson, vice president, CDMA product line management at Nokia Mobile Phones Inc., said the Nokia 2170, along with the Nokia 2180 dual-mode 800 MHz CDMA/AMPS phone introduced in November, underscores Nokia’s serious commitment to CDMA technology. Both phones incorporate Nokia’s own CDMA chip design, which provides customers a choice in selecting CDMA digital technology.

"Now CDMA-based carriers and their subscribers can enjoy the ease of use, extended talk time, outstanding standby time and exceptional call clarity that Nokia customers worldwide enjoy," Paulson said. "The 2170 is extremely user-friendly and comes with a complete line of accessories." The Nokia 2170 incorporates all of Nokia’s award-winning features, including the company’s pioneering, big-screen, 30-character, super-twist LCD display with permanent signal and battery-strength indicators, and separate voice mail and text-message-waiting indicators. "One-touch" dialing keys provide instant access to emergency services, voice mail, messaging, keyguard and frequently called numbers. All features are easily accessible via Nokia’s user-friendly menu with soft-key interface. In its introductory slim-battery configuration, the Nokia 2170 provides up to 90 minutes of talk time and up to 40 hours of standby time. An optional extended NiMH (nickel metal hydride) battery pack is also available, providing up to four hours and fifteen minutes of talk time and up to 110 hours (more than four days) of standby time. A full range of accessories is available including hands-free car, desk and headset kits.
