Nokia to modernise Telecom Finland's national fixed network
December 11, 1997

Concluding an international tendering phase, Nokia has become the sole supplier for Telecom Finland's switching and access network equipment in a three-year contract. The turnkey supply contract between Nokia and Telecom Finland covers access and switching network solutions to modernise the entire Telecom Finland fixed network. Telecom Finland's existing multi-vendor network will be replaced with Nokia switching and access network equipment with V5 and ADSL capability. Deliveries begin in January 1998 and will continue until the year 2000.

"As a fast-growing challenger operator in the increasingly competitive telecommunications environment, we have taken a strategic decision to modernise our fixed network infrastructure to be prepared for tomorrow's service demands," states Mr Aulis Salin, President and CEO of Telecom Finland.

"With Nokia as our supplier for this total network modernisation, we will remain competitive and speedy in our service development and provisioning," he continues. "After all, we are committed to providing equal, individual access to all our 800,000 subscribers for services such as ISDN and fast Internet. This is based on a modern access product platform combining V5.2 and ADSL."

As Mr Matti Alahuhta, President, Nokia Telecommunications comments, "Nokia and Telecom Finland have both grown dynamically over the past few years. In this new phase of modernisation, where Telecom Finland is preparing a nationwide broadband platform for tomorrow's services, we are very proud to participate in such an extremely exciting project."

In this agreement, Nokia will supply DX 200 fixed switching platforms and access networks supporting V5.2 technology. Nokia is a forerunner in the V5 area. Nokia will also provide Intelligent Network interfaces to enable fast service deployment. Additionally, Nokia will supply Nokia NMS, the network management system, which covers management of the whole network as well as customer services.
