Nokia and Tele2 Europe sign agreement for fixed switching platform
December 11, 1997

Nokia and Tele2 Europe S.A. have signed an agreement for the supply of Nokia's DX 200 fixed switching equipment. The equipment will be located in Tele2 Europe's network in Germany, with options for equipment in other markets. Deliv-eries have already started and the switching platform will be operational by the end of this year.

Nokia is supplying the DX 200 digital switching platform to Tele2 Europe, to en-able the provision of a range of long distance and international telephony network services to residential and corporate customers. Nokia will also be supplying a range of customer services as part of this contract, including installation, commis-sioning and on-site service support.

"Our network roll-out plan is extremely ambitious and has placed high demands on Nokia's speed and flexibility," comments Mr Magnus Mandersson, Managing Director, Tele2, Europe. "Our main reason for selecting Nokia was their ability to provide the advanced solution we needed, within our demanding time-frame."

As Mr Mikael von Hertzen, Vice President Fixed Switching, Nokia Telecommuni-cations explains, "This is an important agreement for Nokia. Tele2 have extremely demanding targets and we have been able to clearly demonstrate our abilities to meet the high network build requirements of new operators such as Tele2 Europe."

Based on a service concept developed by Tele2 in Scandinavia, Tele2 Europe’s aim is to provide telecom services, such as telephony, FAX, data and Internet, in a number of European countries as the telecommunication industry is deregu-lated. The first country where this has happened is the Netherlands, where Tele2 Nederland has managed to position itself as the competitor to PTT Telecom. The next country will be Germany, during the first quarter of 1998, followed by other countries during 1998 and 1999.

Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufactures infrastructure equipment and systems for fixed and cellular networks. Nokia's switching solutions and ap-plications are built on the DX 200 switching platform, used in cellular and fixed applications alike. The DX 200 also offers a growth path to broadband applica-tions, including future developments in ATM switching technology. Nokia has de-livered its DX 200 switching solutions to around 120 operators in over 30 coun-tries around the world.
