Nokia and Terra Cognita Donate Books to Schools
December 11, 1997
Nokia and the Terra Cognita publishing company are donating natural science books to all high schools in Finland. The books will be awarded to students who are interested in and have been successful in mathematics, physics and chemistry. There are 480 high schools in Finland with more than 1700 potential award winners. The number represents about 5 percent of the second-year level high school students in Finland.
The books are being distributed to schools, and the teachers will pick the students to be awarded. The schools can pass out the awards at their Christmas parties, for instance, or at some other event they organize.
The books to be given out as awards this year are:
- for mathematics: Silta äärettömyyteen (Bridges to Infinity: The Human Side of Mathematics by Michael Guillen), and Kosmoksen runous (Poetry of the Universe: A Mathematical Exploration of the Cosmos) by Robert Osserman
- for physics: Magneettien luonnollinen magia (Driving Force: The Natural Magic of Magnets) by James D. Livingston
- for chemistry: Kemian eturintamassa (Designing the Molecular World: Chemistry at the Frontier) by Philip Ball
"The mathematics-scientific subjects today represent increasingly significant disciplines. Mastering them is part of basic education and forms a sustaining foundation both for successful business and industry in all of Finland amidst the escalating international competition," notes Nokia President and CEO Jorma Ollila and publisher Kimmo Pietiläinen in their letter to the recipients of the book awards.
This is the third consecutive year Nokia has made such a book donation with the objective of boosting the level of knowledge in mathematics and science and encouraging young people to study these subjects. Nokia also wants to reward those students who take the math-science curriculum. Their choice of subjects is definitely not the easiest possible, but it does guarantee a good and solid foundation for a successful professional career. Nokia believes that it is precisely these students and the previous students receiving the book awards who will be the trailblazers developing the technologies of the future and consequently Finland’s future success.
