Nokia Strengthens Global R&D Network - New Units Established in Denmark and Sweden
November 03, 1997

To further strengthen Nokia's position among the world's leading telecommunications infrastructure companies, Nokia Telecommunications is setting up new Research and Development (R&D) centres in Copenhagen, Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden. The R&D centre based in Denmark will concentrate on the development of the Mobile Intelligent Network Systems (IN) and in Sweden, the focus will be on base station systems for cellular networks.

"Nokia's leadership in GSM markets, where we are currently the world number one in GSM 1800 and the largest GSM 900/1800 base station supplier in Europe, is the result of consistently excellent Research and Development efforts. We are concentrating heavily on the further development of GSM technology and the Stockholm R&D centre will have a significant role in this development," states Mr Christian Kurten, Senior Vice President, Base Stations.

"The continuing development of Nokia's Intelligent Network platform for mobile networks will be further strengthened by our R&D investment in Denmark," continues Mr Lauri Melamies, Senior Vice President, Switching Systems. "Intelligent Networks are definitely of strategic importance for operators in their efforts to differentiate their service offerings. The role of Intelligent Networks is vital in the provision of high value-added service networks."

It is planned that altogether approximately 250 employees will be recruited by the end of 1999 in the Stockholm and Copenhagen R&D units.

In Sweden and Denmark, Nokia has a number of customers for total GSM systems, including IN: Mobilix and Sonofon in Denmark and Europolitan in Sweden. In addition, Nokia is delivering fixed access systems to Telia Sweden and a GSM 1800 network to Telia Finland, as well as fixed network IN solutions to NetCom Systems.

Nokia's Intelligent Network solutions are designed to meet the needs of both fixed and mobile operators from the same platform. This also makes Nokia's IN solution the ideal platform for those mobile operators who are moving to the provision of fixed network services. Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission to switching. Nokia holds the world's number one position in GSM 1800 networks and is one of the top two suppliers in GSM 900 networks. Nokia is the market leader in GSM 900/1800 base station systems in Europe. To date, Nokia GSM technology has been supplied or ordered by 65 operators in 34 countries.
