Nokia announces next generation PDC phone for Japan
November 04, 1997

Nokia today announced its next generation half-rate handportable for the digital PDC standard in Japan. With the introduction of the new product, Nokia is the first company to demonstrate an entirely new, innovative feature for PDC handsets, which enables calling by voice activation. The new Nokia product will be available in the spring of 1998. The product announcement was made in Tokyo at Comm Japan 1997, the country's largest annual telecommunications exhibition.

The name dialing function in the new Nokia handset is a true industry-first innovation in Japan. By pressing a specific "YO-BE-BA" button at the back of the phone, the user can dial a number by speaking a pre-recorded name. When the user presses the button and says a name, the phone searches the name from the pre-recorded 'voice tags' in the memory, and makes the call. The call can be made by using this single button - without looking at the display.

Among the other exciting features, the new Nokia phone is designed to send and receive short messages, has a voice memo and also a SIM slot for future service start. With the unique Mode function, users can program phone settings according to the situation, e.g. by adjusting ringing options to meeting, outdoor or car kit mode.

The new Nokia phone is small and light, weighing less than 100 grams. Yet it comes with the acclaimed Nokia features, such as large display, logical keypad layout, intuitive user interface and menu help texts. The phone operates both in Japanese and in English, and supports full data services. The phone will be available in a variety of colors.

"With the introduction of our latest product, we are taking a major leap in technology. The stylish sleek design and ease-of-use combined with a range of new features, designed specifically for Japan, will make the new handportable competitive among active and demanding users. Small and compact, this phone is still full-featured with good looks and feel" says Olav Stang, President of Nokia Mobile Phones (Japan) K.K.

Nokia Mobile Phones (Japan) K.K. was established in 1993 as a joint venture between Nokia and Mitsui & Co. Nokia was the first foreign manufacturer to enter the digital phone market in Japan. Nokia is also actively involved in the development of third generation standards in Japan, and participates with other vendors in the development of third-generation prototype mobile terminals for NTT DoCoMo's test network.

Japan, with its 27 million cellular subscribers, is currently the second largest cellular market in the world.
