The new Nokia Artus Wireless Data Enhancer
November 05, 1997

providing continuous data connectivity

Nokia today announces that it has developed a revolutionary wireless data product, the Nokia Artus Wireless Data Enhancer, complementing the Nokia Artus product family. The Nokia Artus Wireless Data Enhancer provides continuous wireless data connectivity, faster data transfer and effective wireless data management for GSM subscribers. The Nokia Artus Wireless Data Enhancer also optimises application protocols, enabling the operator to provide faster and more reliable e-mail and Web services to their subscribers.

The Nokia Artus Wireless Data Enhancer, acting for third party applications continuously monitors the data connections through WinSock2 extensions, providing an almost fail-safe data transport. This feature allows the operator the opportunity to offer automatic link reconnection to the mobile user. After recovery, the data transmission will then continue where it left off.

As Mr Petri Pöyhönen, Vice President, Wireless Data Systems Nokia Telecommunications explains, "One of the most frustrating issues for cellular users is the waiting time for data transmission, due to breaks in network connections. As an easy-to-use and cost-effective data solution, reducing the waiting time for data transmission, the Nokia Artus Wireless Data Enhancer encourages mobile users to increase their data usage. By providing another market-shaping product, Nokia has once again demonstrated its leadership in wireless data."

With new e-mail features, the Nokia Artus Wireless Data Enhancer allows networks to perform complex functions not previously available. This in turn, enables operators to now offer their subscribers effective, useful and time-saving e-mail functions. Mobile users can be notified of new mail anytime, anywhere. They will also have the ability to receive mail in the background. In addition, users will be able to use previewing information to choose which messages they want to receive and defer the transfer of large attachments until a more appropriate time.

The Wireless Data Enhancer also offers enhanced web browsing capabilities which improves performance over the cellular network. By reducing the volume and formatting of Web content, subscribers will be able to receive Internet data faster and have the capability to view the information on smart phones, such as the Nokia 9000 Communicator and hand-held devices.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 39.3 billion ($8.5 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people in 45 countries.
