Nokia Leading the Way in V5 Technology
November 05, 1997

Operators today increasingly need to optimise network costs, still keeping an eye firmly on future plans to deliver multimedia services. Taking into account that the access network can comprise upto 70% of the total network costs, optimisation is the key.

The new ETSI standard interface, V5, operates between the access network and the switch for basic telephony, ISDN and semi-permanent leased lines. The V5 standard effectively opens the access network up to competition and allows the operator to deploy the optimal access technology. The network system and operational costs are therefore both reduced with the V5 standard.

"We consider the V5 interface to be an important milestone in the development of access networks", explains Mr. Kari Suneli, Senior Vice President, Access Systems, Nokia. "V5 has superior adaptability in different conditions. For example, a residential network could benefit from Nokia's statistically superior multi-level concentration, resulting in 30% to 50% cost savings in transmission and switching, while adjacent business customers could be connected to a full range of business services, ISDN and data leased lines. Network cost and performance can be more effectively optimised with V5."

Nokia is a leading vendor in the global telecommunications market, introducing a V5-compatible network solution, capable of combining both wireless and wireline access in the same access network and even in the same access point. The same solution provides an efficient growth path to broadband access, which is crucial for tomorrow’s multimedia needs. The Nokia V5 system offering incorporates both V5.1 and V5.2 standards, included in the DX 200 switching system and Nokia's access solutions. Nokia has recently announced its capability for the provision of a full V5 ISDN solution.

The V5 standardisation process is being led by ETSI (the European Telecommunications Standards Institute). The markets for V5 access have opened and are growing fast in Europe, China and South East Asia, as operators start to reap the benefits of open access networks.

In Europe, the V5 standard is important for network modernisation, particularly the reduction of operating costs and the required increase in ISDN coverage. In the Asia Pacific region, and in China in particular, V5 is taken very seriously as it allows the effective combination of wireless and wireline access technologies in the access network. This is important where there is a significant build of new access networks being planned. Nokia is currently participating in a number of V5 trials in Europe, China and South East Asia.

Nokia supplies fixed network solutions to the world's most deregulated markets, such as the UK, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Thailand and New Zealand.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 39.3 billion ($8.5 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people in 45 countries.
