Nokia Introduces Next Generation Product Family for GSM
November 10, 1997
Nokia today introduced its next generation GSM product family in Beijing, China. The new Nokia 6100 series features three products: the Nokia 6110 for GSM 900, the Nokia 6130 for GSM 1800 (Nokia 6138 for Asia-Pacific) and the Nokia 6190 for GSM 1900 networks. The products are unique in their ability to adapt to different situations and lifestyles, and they boast excellent operating times and a set of innovative industry-first features. The phones will be available in volume in February 1998.
The new Nokia 6100 phones stand by longer than any other handportable - up to 270 hours (12 days) with the slim and up to 450 hours with the extended battery. Talktime is up to 5 hours with the slim and up to 8 hours with the extended battery. Other battery options include the standard NiMH and vibrating battery.
The Nokia 6100 products provide superb audio and speech quality through leak tolerant speaker and acoustic echo cancellation technology, and are the first to support all three wireless voice codecs: enhanced full rate (EFR) for improved voice quality; half-rate and full rate. Nokia developed the EFR jointly with the University of Sherbrooke, and drove the adoption of EFR to the industry standard for GSM.
An entirely new Profile function in the Nokia 6100 phones enables users to adjust the phone settings according to various situations, with caller grouping and caller group identification through different ringing tones and graphics. For example, by selecting the Meeting mode, the phone alerts only for priority calls, while Outdoors mode alerts louder and can be set to only allow private calls through. The user can also define different ringing tones for various caller groups, such as friends and colleagues.
Ideal for both business and private use, the calendar in the Nokia 6100 phones allows the user to record appointments or write notes. These, as well as short messages, can be sent and printed out using the built-in infrared link, enabling wireless communication with a compatible PC or another Nokia 6100 series phone. The handsets fully support data services.
Designed also for fun, the Nokia 6100 phones include three games: Snake, Logic and Memory. Games can also be played against someone else using the infrared link.
Other features include a large and dynamic display with up to 5 lines for text, numbers and graphics; advanced call and memory management; a list of the 10 last calls with time stamps on missed calls; one touch voice mail, 28 language options, a calculator and a real time clock. Small and compact, the 6100 series of phones weigh 137 grams.
The stylish and ergonomical design features three exciting chameleon covers which change color according to the phone's position and light. A wide range of accessories will be available for the Nokia 6100 series.
With true 3 volt capabilities, Nokia 6100 series of handsets feature the latest technology. The phones support GSM phase 2 features. With the Nokia Plus module, Nokia 6190 is the first phone supporting dual mode AMPS/GSM 1900 roaming.
Unveiling the new products at the launch event in Beijing, Pekka Ala-Pietilä, President, Nokia Mobile Phones, stated, "Today mobile phones are used by nearly 200 million people worldwide. With the ongoing rapid growth, defining a typical cellular user is becoming increasingly complex. The expansion of wireless communications has demonstrated the value of being in touch regardless of the time or place. We believe that mobile phone will become the preferred phone for everybody - and Nokia's human technology will be there to deliver it."
"When the Nokia 6100 product family was designed, we carefully analyzed what people need from their phone. Excellent operating times, optimal size with attractive looks and feel, latest technology with a lot of features and good call management are primary values in a handset. The new, powerful Nokia 6100 products can deliver all of these, while also introducing a number of innovative first-ever features. Now we are launching the next Nokia classic after the highly successful Nokia 2100 series", says Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones.
