Shanghai Unicom using Nokia's SYNFONET solution to provide GSM traffic links
November 11, 1997

Shanghai Unicom and Guilin Nokia Telecom, have signed a contract for the supply of Nokia's SDH solution, the Nokia SYNFONET. Deliveries have already commenced and the network will be installed and fully operational by the end of 1997.

Nokia is delivering SYNFONET STM-1 equipment as well as STM-4 DXC's to be deployed altogether in over ninety stations to enable Shanghai Unicom to initially carry GSM base station traffic. The equipment will be deployed in a multi SDH ring architecture, which will be managed by the Nokia Network Management System, NMS/100. Unicom then later plan to expand the network to support future fixed network traffic and Nokia is well placed to support them for their future needs.

"This is an exciting agreement for Nokia," states Mr. Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President, Nokia, Greater China. "The Shanghai Unicom fixed transmission network is the largest so far to be implemented by any Unicom branch in China and this agreement therefore represents a significant milestone for both Nokia and Unicom."

Shanghai Unicom was established in July 1994 and currently has more than 50,000 subscribers in their GSM network. Nokia has been the main base station system supplier to the Shanghai Unicom GSM network since 1995.

Nokia's comprehensive SDH solution, Nokia SYNFONET, is designed for effective access and transport networks incorporated under a full network management system. The Nokia SYNFONET solution enables the operator to flexibly build their network, taking in account future data and broadband solutions. Nokia's SDH technology has been supplied to or ordered by more than 60 customers in almost 20 countries.
