Nokia Opens Research and Development Facility in China
November 11, 1997
Nokia will establish a research and development facility in China to begin operation on January 1st, 1998. The unit, which will be located in Beijing, will focus on research and development in both future wireless and wireline technologies.
Specific areas for the research and development facility include technologies and concepts for future mobile communications, technologies for mobile terminals, including wireless data solutions, and advanced fixed access solutions. As an integral part of Nokia´s global research and development network, the facility will be involved in applying the latest technology to products and solutions for the Chinese market. In addition, the unit will expand cooperation with the Chinese research and development community in order to provide input on China´s requirements to global projects. The facility is planned to grow to around 100 people within two years and will be headed by Mr Markku Ranta, currently responsible for international operations at Nokia Research Center.
With over 8,000 people around the world directly involved in research and development projects, Nokia has always placed high importance on pioneering technology, in order to develop innovative new products like the first all-in-one mobile communications tool, the highly acclaimed Communicator 9000; the world´s first digital multimedia terminal; and the world´s first GSM dual band base station.
"This is an important milestone in Nokia´s investment in China," says Ms Sari Baldauf, Executive Vice President, Nokia Asia-Pacific and a member of Nokia Executive Board. "It further illustrates our commitment to being a leading telecommunications company in China, and underlines our belief that China´s telecommunications community will have an important contribution to global development."
Nokia has established itself as a leading supplier of telecommunications networks and mobile phones in China. Nokia has five joint ventures and a network of offices, employing almost 2,000 people.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled $8.5 billion in 1996. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people in 45 countries. Nokia’s shares are listed in Helsinki, New York, London, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Paris.
