Nokia and Telemig Trial GSM Wireless Local Loop network in Brazil
November 12, 1997

Following the signing of an agreement between Nokia, Telecomunicações de Minas Gerais (Telemig) and Telebrás, a complete Wireless Local Loop test network in the south-eastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, has been deployed. The network has been deployed in the city of Divinópolis, which is a major trunking node for telephone traffic for the whole of the Minas Gerais state.

Nokia is using its Easywave Wireless Local Loop solution based on GSM 1900 technology in this trial. The GSM platform offers the widest range of services and is the most appropriate technology both for high-capacity urban areas and for regions requiring widespread coverage. The robustness of the GSM platform and the advantages resulting from the economies of scale of more than 55 million subscribers worldwide, make the system attractive from both an economic and technical point of view.

The trial network comprises Nokia PrimeSite base stations mounted directly on top of an existing 70 meter microwave tower, thus saving site and installation costs. There is also a PrimeHopper microwave link and a DAXnode 5000 WLL access node, connecting the GSM radio network with a wireline switch.

Subscribers are using Nokia PremiCell subscriber terminals, which accommodate a fixed line telephone, fax and can also provide a data connection to a computer. Nokia PremiCell terminals can be easily installed by the subscriber in their home without the use of complicated tools.

The pilot is at an advanced testing phase and the results will be submitted for acceptance in January 1998 to Telebrás, the Brazilian state-owned operator holding company. Telebrás is a holding company made-up of 26 separate telephone operating companies.

The Nokia Wireless Local Loop (WLL) solution, the Nokia EasyWave, enables operators to make use of an existing GSM cellular network, or implement a wireless access solution to the PSTN, in providing a fixed type of telephony services to its customers. WLL enables the operator to rapidly set up a network that grows as the number of subscribers grow.

Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufactures infrastructure equipment and systems for fixed and cellular networks. Nokia is the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest suppliers of GSM 900. In mobile data infrastructure, Nokia is a market leader and pioneer. To date, Nokia's GSM technology has been supplied to or ordered by 65 operators in 34 countries.
