November 14, 1997
Nokia and the Henan Post and Telecommunications Administration (PTA) have signed a contract for the supply of the third expansion to the Henan PTA GSM 900 network. The value of the contract is approximately USD 20 million and the network will be operational by March 1998.
Nokia will deliver its high capacity mobile switching centre, including Home Location Registers to Henan. Additionally, Nokia will supply base station systems including base station controllers and base stations.
"This contract once again confirms Henan's continuing confidence in Nokia's GSM solution," states Mr Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President, Nokia, Greater China. "Having supplied the original Henan GSM 900 network and its subsequent expansions, we are very happy to partner Henan in this third phase of the network growth."
This third expansion will increase the network capacity to 620,000 subscribers in the Henan province. The initial network supplied by Nokia, was taken into operation in April 1996. Nokia also supplied the first network expansion to Henan during 1996. In terms of population, Henan is the largest province in China. Henan PTA is rapidly developing its telecommunications business; the monthly growth of GSM subscribers in the Henan PTA network is more than 15,000.
Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching. Having supplied GSM technology to 65 operators in 34 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.
