Nokia Awards One Millionth GSM 1900 Customer With Gift of a Nokia 9000i Communicator
November 17, 1997
Nokia handsets and infrastructure have played an essential role in the success of GSM-based Personal Communications Services
IRVING, Texas - Nokia announced today its donation of a Nokia 9000i Communicator, the world's first all-in-one communications device, to Barbara Zahner, North American GSM carriers' one-millionth subscriber. Zahner, a San Jose, Calif., resident, plans to use her new Nokia 9000i Communicator to assist in her responsibilities at Sacred Heart Community Service, a group that provides a food pantry, free clothing, job assistance and other goodwill services.
To further commemorate GSM's 1 millionth customer, Nokia and other members of GSM North America and the GSM Alliance are donating to food banks across the United States.
"After nearly seven years as the digital standard of choice in Europe and Asia, GSM is now one of the preeminent technologies in the Americas," said Jyrki Salo, president of Nokia's infrastructure business group in the Americas. "Nokia congratulates Zahner as well as all of the GSM carriers throughout North America on this important milestone,"
The revolutionary Nokia 9000i Communicator combines digital voice and data services and personal organizer functions into a single, small-sized and easy-to-use unit. More than a full-featured digital phone, the Nokia 9000i Communicator enables users to send and receive faxes, e-mails and short messages as well as access Internet services and corporate and public databases. Other applications include an electronic calendar, address book, notepad, calculator and world clock. Recently made available in the Americas, the Nokia 9000i Communicator is also sold in some 30 GSM 900 MHz and GSM 1800 MHz countries in Europe and Asia.
