Nokia Supplies Actionet Trunking Radio System to Outokumpu Chrome Mine, Finland
November 24, 1997

Outokumpu Oy, Finland, one of Europe's largest producers of refined steel sheets and strips, and Nokia Telecommunications have signed an agreement for the supply of an Actionet network expansion. This expansion is for the Outokumpu Polarit steel factory’s Actionet trunking radio system. The Actionet expansion will also cover the Outokumpu Chrome mine.

The new agreement includes the expansion of the switch, base stations for the steel factory and an expansion to cover the chrome mine in the neighbouring town of Kemi. Nokia delivered an Actionet system in 1994 to Outokumpu Polarit’s steel factory in the city of Tornio, northern Finland.

"Nokia’s Actionet system meets our communications needs for both our chrome mine and steel factory. This system enables us to communicate fluently and therefore improve our operations," explains Mr. Risto Liisanantti, Administrative Director for Outokumpu Polarit.

Nokia will deliver base stations to the Kemi chrome mine for use underground as well as above ground. The antenna of the underground base stations will be replaced with special cable, which in the first phase will be installed approximately three kilometres into the mine.
