Nokia Telecommunications and GIN join up to offer turn-key, value-added wireless data services
November 28, 1997
Nokia Telecommunications and GSM Information Network B.V. (GIN) will co-operate in providing turn-key, value-added wireless data service solutions to telecommunications operators. The two companies have now signed a memorandum of understanding for this. Nokia will offer its Nokia Artus Messaging Platform separately, but operators also have the chance to acquire this platform together with content services provided by GIN.
The Nokia Artus Messaging Platform solution enables GSM phone users to directly access the Internet and fetch information from the Web pages. The information is formed into short messages and sent back to the subscriber. The services offered in various countries around the world at the moment include for example, sports and financial news, stock information and a dictionary.
GIN's Content Server is connected to the Internet. This enables an immediate connection to any Nokia Artus Messaging Platform worldwide. Using the Internet as an artificial "leased line", GIN offers services to operators. These services can be set up within a short period, providing operators with a fast time to market with their new service. At a later date, operators can add new services from GIN or from other content providers.
GSM Information Network BV (GIN) offers services including stock exchange information, currency values, weather services, traffic information, hotel reservations, restaurants bookings, airline schedules, sending faxes etc. The services are offered in many languages for world-wide delivery. GIN also co-operates with different local and international Information Providers.
"The idea of providing GSM handsets with Internet information clearly has two main parts; the means to transfer the information and the information content itself. With this agreement, Nokia and GIN are aiming to offer both elements in the same package, making it as easy and as fast as possible for operators to start offering services to their subscribers", says Pekka Pohjakallio, Product Line Manager, Nokia Telecommunications.
"We see the agreement between Nokia and us as an important and productive co-operation, enabling us to increase penetration in the global market. Our continuing effort to make access to content easier and the formatting of that content for Smart Phones with the Nokia Artus Messaging Platform is a perfect breeding ground for creative solutions," says Curt Roth, GIN’s founder and president.
GIN's main office is in Holland. As part of the joint venture in Malaysia (Sapura Messaging), GIN is the pioneer in Value-Added Services for Mobile Digital Networks. With multiple GSM networks connected in Europe and Asia, GIN’s advanced position in the offering and packaging of Value Added Services is recognised by major network operators.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled $8.5 billion in 1996. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people in 45 countries.
