MobileOne of Singapore Selects Again Nokia for GSM Expansion
October 06, 1997

MobileOne and Nokia have signed an agreement for the second expansion of the MobileOne’s GSM network capacity to accommodate around 200,000 customers. The total value of the agreement is approximately SGD 50 million (over USD 30 million) . Nokia continues to be the sole supplier of the MobileOne network.

Under this contract, Nokia will supply high capacity DX200 mobile switching equipment, tropicalised outdoor Base Stations, macro and indoor Base Stations and several large capacity Base Station Controllers. In addition, the contract includes a comprehensive Nokia test-bed which comprises all the network elements used in the MobileOne network.

A comprehensive service package is also included in the contract, covering network planning, network optimisation, implementation and network quality benchmarking for MobileOne.

“We expect to welcome our 100 000th customer in the next week or so and it is an extremely encouraging milestone coming just over six months after our launch. We would like to thank all our customers for their support and confidence in us,” says Mr. Neil Montefiore, Chief Executive Officer of MobileOne.

“MobileOne’s success lies in their relentless effort to maintain a high level of service to their customers while offering good value for money. No wonder MobileOne’s achievements within six months of operations have kept Singapore talking,” says Mr. Antti Räikkönen, Managing Director of Nokia Telecommunications, Singapore.

MobileOne, Singapore’s newest mobile and paging service provider, is a consortium of the Keppel Group, Singapore Press Holdings, Cable & Wireless and Hong Kong Telecom.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching. To date, Nokia GSM technology has been supplied to or ordered by 65 operators in 34 countries.
