Nokia-Developed Technology Enhances TDMA Voice Quality and Clarity
October 09, 1997
- Nokia's Enhanced Full Rate vocoder to be included in all of the industry’s TDMA phones, including the new Nokia 2160i
- Nokia today announced that its improved TDMA IS-136 wireless phone, the Nokia 2160i, is equipped with the Nokia-developed Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) vocoder. Nokia’s EFR ACELP vocoder, which delivers enhanced digital voice quality, has been chosen as the industry standard for TDMA and will be used by all other wireless handset manufacturers.
The new TDMA vocoder, developed by Nokia and the University of Sherbrooke (Canada), incorporates Nokia’s own leading-edge voice processing technology. (The EFR vocoder is a coding algorithm that facilitates the conversion of analog speech into a digital data stream that can be modulated for transmission over the radio channel.)
This TDMA vocoder is the latest reflection of Nokia’s global leadership in digital technology development and commitment to improved wireless voice quality. Nokia’s EFR voice codec technology was chosen as the industry standard for GSM 1900 and has been adopted as the industry standard codec for GSM/DCS around the world. Nokia has also provided essential algorithms for CDMA s enhanced variable rate codec.
"As evidenced by the industry-wide acceptance of our technology, Nokia is setting the standard for improved wireless voice quality," said Rich Geruson, senior vice president, sales and marketing, USA at Nokia Mobile Phones, Inc. "Nokia’s continued leadership in digital technology has improved the way end users perceive wireless service."
The Nokia 2160i is now commercially available in five colors and incorporates all of the award-winning Nokia features. These include Nokia’s pioneering, big-screen, 30-character super-twist LCD display with permanent signal and battery strength indicators, separate voice mail and text-message-waiting indicators, and eight "one-touch" dialing keys for instant access to emergency services, voice mail and frequently called numbers. All of the features offered are easily accessible via Nokia’s user-friendly menu with soft-key interface. A wide range of Genuine Nokia accessories are also available, including versatile solutions for home, office and automobile use.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 39.3 billion ($8.5 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 34,000 people in 45 countries. Nokia's shares are listed in Helsinki, New York, London, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Paris.
