Nokia's Full-Scale V5 and ISDN Solution
October 21, 1997
Today at ECC '97, Nokia announces its capability for the provision of a full V5 ISDN solution. Nokia is the only vendor in the UK market providing all V5 solutions. This includes both V5.1 and V5.2 interfaces for the Nokia DX 200 switching platform. Nokia is also providing the compatible access equipment supporting both V5.1 and V5.2 interfaces.
Nokia's full-scale ISDN V5 solution enables operators to implement vendor-independent access network solutions. This brings cost-effective access technology, as the interface is an industry standard and therefore the operator can choose from many vendors' solutions.
In practice, when upgrading a connection from analogue to ISDN, an operator only has to swap out one plug-in unit in the Nokia DX 200 exchange. This plug-in unit is the Nokia V5-ET (Exchange Terminal). Once this unit is in place, the exchange is ready to interface with any vendor's V5-compatible access solution.
A long history in ISDN
Nokia has been developing ISDN for over a decade, and offers a mature ISDN solution containing a wide variety of bearer services, teleservices and supplementary services. Nokia's ISDN solution is based on the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI), which provides a standardised network infrastructure to deliver cost-effective digital solutions to a wide variety of users in many countries.
Nokia’s ISDN capability is built on the Nokia DX 200 switching platform, which offers full redundancy, resulting in minimum downtime and excellent reliability.
Analogue services through ISDN Basic Access
The DX 200 switch offers analogue services through ISDN Basic Rate Access. End-users upgrading to ISDN can retain access to the network services they have been familiar with on their analogue phones and lines, such as call diversion and call return. With upgrade to ISDN, end-users have the advantages of intelligent ISDN terminal equipment and network services, but can continue to access analogue network services and still use the existing analogue terminals (such as faxes, analogue phones, answering machines) where required.
Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufactures infrastructure equipment and systems for fixed and cellular networks. Nokia's solutions provide network operators with access and regional network solutions to connect end users to network services. Nokia has already supplied access solutions to over forty countries worldwide. Nokia's switching solutions and applications are built on the DX 200 switching platform, used in cellular and fixed applications alike.

Note to editors:
V5 is an open interface standardised by both ETSI and the ITU. V5 is a vendor independent, digital interface between a local exchange and the access network. Two different standards of V5 interfaces exist - V5.1 and V5.2. V5.1 is a static multiplexer interface consisting of one 2Mbit/s connection, whereas V5.2 is a dynamic multiplexer interface that can consist of up to 16x2 Mbit/s connections.
