Nokia Expands Its Research & Development Facility in Oulu

Nokia Telecommunications and Nokia Mobile Phones are expanding their Research & Development facilities in Oulu. New premises totalling 9,000 m2 are being built for Nokia Mobile Phones as part of the Oulu Technopolis technology park. For Nokia Telecommunications, a total of 12,500 m2of new buildings are under construction. This will include an expansion of the existing Research & Development facility by 2,000 m2.
Nokia Telecommunications’ Research & Development facility will be used for R&D work on fixed network systems. The R&D personnel occupying the new premises will move from Oulu Technopolis and Haukipudas.
“The way we have chosen to expand allows us to increase co-operation between different R&D units, which are at present located in various places”, explains Kimmo Väänänen, Head of R&D, Nokia Telecommunications, Fixed Switching. “At the same time this solution gives us the possibility to flexibly expand our operations.”
Nokia Mobile Phones' new building work will expand its facilities located on Oulu Technopolis technology park. “We are deeply involved in international development work on the new generation of mobile phones. These new premises will enable the Oulu R&D unit to continue its commitment to designing mobile phones for the future”, says Jaakko Hulkko, Vice President, R&D, Nokia Mobile Phones.
The new premises will be completed during 1998. The developer and owner of the new buildings will be Oulu Technopolis Ltd.
