Christmas in the air with Nokia 8110i
October 31, 1997

This Christmas season Nokia is offering a special gift over the air. Nokia will send up to 32 new ringing tones to everyone who buys a Nokia 8110i mobile phone beginning now until Christmas. Each day beginning December 1 and ending on New Year's Day, a new ringing tone will be sent to the phone via Smart Messaging. The new tone automatically replaces the previously saved ringing tone.

Customers who buy the Nokia 8110i are invited to join Club Nokia free of charge. After registering, the customer will start receiving the new ringing tones, in addition to other benefits of Club Nokia. The ringing tones consist of famous Christmas carols such as Jingle bells, Noël, and Santa Lucia, one for each day until New Year's Day. The campaign takes place in Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

The Nokia 8110i is the first phone to support Smart Messaging, a concept which enables the user to request and receive information and services from an information server via GSM's text messages (SMS). These services could include flight schedules, weather reports, stock news, currency rates and tele-banking information. To access the services, the subscriber simply enters a key word and sends it as a short message to the network server. The requested information is formulated into an SMS message and sent back to the subscriber. The downloading of new ringing tones is just one example of the value added services which Smart Messaging can provide.

"With the Christmas in the Air campaign, Nokia wishes to demonstrate the new services available for mobile phone users. Nokia’s Smart Messaging makes the Nokia 8110i a truly 'smart' Christmas present. With this gift we would also like to wish our customers a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !" says Bengt-Åke Gyllenberg, Vice President, Sales, Europe and Africa, Nokia Mobile Phones.

The Christmas campaign has been developed following the positive response of last year's campaign, in which the Nokia 2110 dressed up for Christmas. The Christmas phone had special software, which provided the "Jingle bells" ringing tone and displayed Santa Claus and a reindeer on the screen during an incoming call.
