With Nokia Technology, SFR Makes the Highest Ever Cellular Call in Europe
September 01, 1997

A team of twelve people yesterday reached the top of Mont-Blanc, France to make the highest cellular call ever in Europe. The team, including eleven people from SFR, Société Francaise du Radiotéléphone, and one person from Nokia, scaled the 4,807 metre-high mountain to make the call over the SFR network. Both telephone and fax calls were made.

The Nokia 1611 handset was used to make phone calls, and the Nokia 9000 Communicator was used to send faxes. In addition to the Nokia base station subsystems already implemented in SFR's GSM network, a Nokia PrimeSite Base Station was installed at Brévent (Chamonix). This optimised coverage in the Chamonix Valley and guaranteed full coverage on the French side of Mont-Blanc.

"We are delighted to have achieved this human and technological record," stated M. Bernard GENDRE, SFR, Director of the Center East Region. “This achievement is a clear demonstration of the complementary know-how essential to effective team-work. Furthermore, it clearly highlights the excellent partnership between Nokia and SFR, which began in 1993."

SFR operates a GSM network which covers 82% of the French population and has more than 1.3 million subscribers. SFR and TAM-TAM are the mobile communications divisions of Cegetel. Cegetel is the new global telecommunications operator in France. With net sales of 9 billion French Francs, Cegetel employs over 3 000 people. Cegetel activities include voice and data transportation, fixed and cellular telephony and local or long distance communications.

Nokia is the world’s largest manufacturer of digital mobile phones and one of the two largest suppliers of GSM networks with sales in approximately 130 countries. Nokia is also the global leader in wireless data. With net sales totaling USD 8.5 billion in 1996, Nokia employs over 34 000 people in 45 countries.
