The First Call in Helsinki City Energy Company’s TETRA Network
September 02, 1997
The first call on the Helsinki City Energy Company’s digital TETRA network has today been made. The network was also taken into test use. Mr. Ilkka Pirvola, Managing Director of Helsinki City Energy Company and Mr. Tapio Heikkilä, General Manager of Nokia Telecommunications’ Professional Mobile Radio business unit, placed the opening call.
The network, called officially HelenNet by Helsinki City Energy Company, is the world’s first network taken into operative use, according to the TETRA standard. The network was supplied by Nokia and the deliveries included a switching centre, base stations, network management system, antennas and terminals.
With this new network Helsinki City Energy Company is replacing its present analogue system. The TETRA network will be deployed in different phases. In addition to the standard use, the HelenNet network will be used to define and test data services to improve its data and speech communication. The partners in this data cooperation are Helsinki City Energy Company, Nokia and the Finnish companies ABB Transmit Oy, Enermet Oy, Tekla Oy and the Finnish Technical Research Center.
“With this new network our employees can reach the information they need wherever they are. In practice this means that you can have a connection from your car to the database you need. So, our employees only have to visit the office when it is really necessary”, Mr. Ilkka Pirvola pointed out. “The other essential target is to increase the efficiency and flexibility of collecting information. The measuring locations in our present static network cover only the most important positions. Using the TETRA network we can collect the information without going to the measuring locations. This is a useful feature for example in follow-up and consumption measurements.”
Mr. Tapio Heikkilä emphasized Nokia’s expertise in TETRA. “Our strength is the strong experience in all core areas of TETRA, including digital switching technology and radio telephone technology. We have been developing TETRA for almost 10 years. In addition, we have delivered our Actionet trunked radio systems based upon the open MPT 1327 analogue standard to over 100 customers in more than 30 countries.”
Terrestrial Trunked Radio, TETRA, is a new open digital trunked radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to meet the needs of the most demanding professional mobile radio users such as utility and oil companies, railways and authorities. A large group of European user and manufacturer organizations have participated in the definition of the standard. The TETRA Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was established in December 1994, as a forum to represent the interest of all parties in TETRA, including users, manufacturers, operators, test houses and telecom agencies. Today, the TETRA MoU represents 65 companies from 18 countries. According to estimates, TETRA-based systems will have 5 - 10 million users by year 2010.
Nokia has been developing TETRA for almost 10 years and its delivery capability includes complete systems encompassing switching centres, base stations, terminals, network management centres and dispatcher stations. Nokia has delivered its ACTIONET trunked radio systems based upon the open MPT 1327 analogue standard to over 100 customers in more than 30 countries.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales total FIM 39.3 billion (USD 8.5 billion) in 1996.
