Electronic Payment Services showcased with the Nokia 9000 Communicator
September 08, 1997

Nokia is showcasing at TELECOM Interactive ´97 (Geneva, Switzerland) electronic payment services done via the Internet in GSM networks, using the Nokia 9000 Communicator. The demonstration is part of the cooperation between Nokia and Unisource NV.

Nokia and Unisource NV have set up a trial where over one hundred users can test mobile, on-line services in electronic commerce and banking. The official name of the trial is “Nokia Unisource Smart Access Pilot” and test-users come from different companies, such as Telia, Swiss Telecom, PTT Netherlands, NatWest and Mondex UK.

“The purpose of the trial is to prove the commercial feasibility of electronic payment, to develop new value-added services for our customers and to further test the technology. In the electronic payment concept there are boundless opportunities for business and commerce. The Internet and cellular networks are the two most rapidly growing information and communication platforms of today. Together they make an ideal backbone for the emerging electronic payment systems”, says Mikko Terho, Vice President, Wireless Data, Nokia Mobile Phones.

"Many information services use a subscription model for payment today because there is no workable alternative", says Julian Wilson, Unisource Director, Smart Access. “In the Smart Access trial with Nokia we demonstrate an attractive alternative to subscription.”

Smart Access makes use of electronic cash cards, which are becoming increasingly common, to enable immediate "virtual membership" to an information service. "Smart Access will complement existing subscription services and offer a new revenue opportunity to smaller businesses ", says Julian Wilson.

The Nokia 9000 Communicator enables transactions to take place using smart card based Mondex electronic cash. The user inserts the card into the smart card reader, plugs the reader into the Nokia 9000 Communicator and downloads cash over the air. The money can be used for live, on-line payments over the air. Users can purchase value-added information services or buy new software applications to their Nokia 9000 Communicators over the web at anytime whilst mobile.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 39.3 billion ($8.5 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 34,000 people in 45 countries. Nokia's shares are listed in Helsinki, New York, London, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Paris.
