Nokia Research Center Expands to Japan
September 25, 1997

Nokia Research Center, the research arm of the Nokia Group, is expanding its global activities this fall by establishing a research and development unit in Tokyo, Japan. The Research Center already has units in Helsinki and Tampere, Finland, Bochum, Germany, and in Dallas and Boston in the USA.

Japan is one of the world’s leading countries in the development of technology, and therefore the expansion of Nokia's R&D operations to Japan is important. Nokia Mobile Phones established its first R&D unit there in 1995.

Japan is also significant to Nokia in terms of third-generation cellular technology. Last spring, NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (NTT DoCoMo), Japan’s leading cellular operator, chose Nokia to cooperate with a group that is developing mobile terminals for their test network based on WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technology. One of the responsibilities of Nokia Research Center’s Japan unit is to support Nokia’s participation in the NTT DoCoMo project.

Nokia’s major efforts in third-generation cellular technologies also extend to active participation in international standardization work. Nokia Research Center in Japan, along with other Nokia units, is participating in the work of the local standardization bodies ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Businesses) and TTC (Telecommunications Technology Committee). In addition, the Research Center aims to increase Nokia’s cooperation with local universities and research institutes.

As the corporate research unit, Nokia Research Center´s role is to boost the Nokia Group´s technological competitiveness. It explores and develops technologies in areas crucial to Nokia´s success, such as mobile and fixed telecommunications, audio-visual signal processing, software and electronics. Its main focuses include GSM enhancement and third-generation cellular systems, broadband communications and multimedia.

The Research Center employs more than 600 people. As a whole, Nokia has more than 8 000 employees dedicated to R&D in 33 R&D centers worldwide. In 1996, the Group´s R&D expenditure totalled FIM 3.5 billion (USD 0.8 billion), or 8.9 percent of net sales, which was an increase of 39 per cent over the previous year.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. With sales in approximately 130 countries, net sales totalled FIM 39.3 billion (USD 8.5 billion) in 1996. Nokia employs more than 34,000 people in 45 countries.
