Nokia Increases Its Presence in Japan, One of the World´s Fastest Growing Telecom Markets

Nokia today reaffirmed its strong commitment to Japan, one of the world´s fastest growing telecom markets. "We strongly believe that Japan will continue to be a major player in the global telecom market also in the future," said Ms Sari Baldauf, Executive Vice President, Nokia Asia-Pacific and a member of the Nokia Executive Board in Tokyo today. The seminar was organized in conjunction with the state visit of the President of Finland, Mr Martti Ahtisaari to Japan this week.
Earlier this year Nokia was selected by NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) as one of the companies to participate in the development of the future 3rd generation technology. Nokia has also announced its support of the new WCDMA as a radio access solution for this cellular standard.
"Nokia believes in a mutually beneficial long-term cooperation with the Japanese operators and vendors. All of these parties represent a wealth of complementary skills and abilities, which, when combined can lead us to a successful solution for a truly global cellular standard."
Japan is one of the world’s forerunners in the development of telecommunications technology, and Nokia sees the expansion of its business activities in Japan as well as its R&D operations as important. Nokia opened an R&D unit in Tokyo in 1995 and from the start of 1997 these activities also include infrastructure R&D for IMT-2000. This autumn, Nokia will further expand its research and development activities by establishing a corporate research unit in Japan. One of the tasks of Nokia Research Center’s Japan unit is to support Nokia’s participation in the IMT-2000 project.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a leader in digital technologies including mobile phones, cellular and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data solutions and multimedia terminals. Nokia was the first European company to start deliveries of PDC digital cellular phones to Japan in 1994. With the growing importance of wireless data, Nokia was also the first foreign manufacturer to introduce the cellular data card to Japanese digital cellular networks in 1996. Nokia´s mobile phones are sold through major Japanese cellular operators. Today Nokia employs more than 100 people in Japan. In Finland, Nokia is one of the founding members of the Finland Japan Foundation to be established this year. The main objective of the Foundation is to promote the recognition of Finland´s culture, science, technology and economy in Japan.
